Reflections from the Tekakwitha Fund's Guatemalan Adventure

In May 2011 five women participated in the Kateri Tekakwitha Fund’s Guatemalan Adventure, where they met the staff and women of the Fund. This is the first of their reflections on the trip.

“I have been involved with the Kateri Tekakwitha Fund since its inception. I was a friend of the founder, Kay Sweeney, before she went to Guatemala. I have always been interested in providing people – especially students – with options for their future. The scholarship focus of the Kateri Fund was in line with my interests. Whatever a recipient does with her education is her choice, but at least she has a different or more choice after the scholarship.

I decided to go on the Kateri Fund’s Guatemalan Adventure because it would be both a chance to meet with the Guatemalan women involved with the fund and a chance to be a touristin Antigua. My favorite experience on the trip was the reunion lunch with graduates in Santa Clara la Laguna. Not only did they make the effort to come to meet us but they also enjoyed seeing each other. I also enjoyed seeingLakeAtitlán– although too briefly – and I loved the walking tour ofAntigua– the contrast between the restored buildings and those still in ruins, the surrounding volcanoes hugging the city, and the people in it.

I hope this is the first of many such adventures sponsored by the fund. I am still enthralled by the colors in the traje, on the buildings, and in the crafts for sale”.
