We would like to congratulate Lilian, a scholarship recipient in our nursing program, who recently received a job offer at a hospital, something that has been a goal of hers during her studies. She is now working at a hospital that specializes in the care of children with cancer.

Lilian had dreams of studying nursing above all to help others.
“I liked the career because it is a very humanistic profession, in which, through the attention we give to patients, we can make them feel better,” she reflects.
She decided to study nursing, but she still encountered obstacles. One challenge that she, along with the rest of the world, faced was the pandemic.
“It affected my studies since we couldn’t attend in-person classes for a long time, and we had to adapt to managing technology.”
In the face of these changes, she tried to take advantage of technology to learn more, using all of the tools within her reach to keep learning.
She also encountered financial difficulties. Then she received a scholarship from the Kateri Tekakwitha Fund, which allowed her to continue studying. As part of this program, she also received the support of her mentor, Karyn Choy, who works with and gives advice to all of the students in the program.
“She has been a big help in orienting me and supporting me in classes in which I need help, and she’s always available when we need her,” Lilian describes.
After all of these efforts, Lilian reached her goal of working in a hospital. In this role, she strives to care for the children in the hospital emotionally and well as physically. She recognizes that many of them feel sad and depressed when they receive their diagnosis, but she tries to give them the attention that they need to feel better.

"I can see and feel the satisfaction when the children recover and how day by day they fight against an illness,” she describes. “It’s so wonderful to see that look of appreciation for the care that we give.”
She also still has the desire to use her knowledge to help her own family when they need it.
“Now I am with them, always available to help them and make them feel better when they get sick,” she says with satisfaction. “They have never stopped motivating me to move forward, and now that I can help them I will do so with great tenderness.”

Lilian still has dreams for her future. She needs to study for two more years in order to finish her university degree. She wants to continue learning more and more in order to better help her patients. She would also like to be able to teach others. She always has her family in mind as well, and she hopes to be able to help her siblings to continue their studies too.
She is grateful to her family for their constant support and for the advice they give her about her work and about treating people well. She appreciates Kateri’s nursing program for the help it has given her.
“Thank you for the support of the entire Kateri team. I feel very grateful and fortunate to have people who continue supporting me to grow professionally,” she says.
She encourages others to keep moving forward in the face of difficulties.
“Life is full of many obstacles. Sometimes we are down below, fighting for things that we want in the future, but with effort, dedication, and perseverance we can advance little by little. And we never arrive at where we want, because as we advance we continue wanting to achieve more and more things.”
